Sakai Boston Preconference OSP Workshop

Building a Portfolio for Your Institution Using Sakai

Faculty, instructional technologists, and web developers worked together to complete a simple portfolio project.  The workshop offered the opportunity to receive step-by-step guidance, a chance to do it oneself, and the opportunity to ask questions.

We encouraged participants to:

• Send faculty and instructional technologists to the morning session, which focused on functionality and pedagogical uses as well as providing an overview of how the tools work together.
• Send web developers and XML gurus to the afternoon session, which focused on the technical knowledge and best practices for making the suite of tools work together to implement a given portfolio design.

Tuesday Afternoon: Technical Training for Building OSP

We spent a large part of the afternoon in an XML IDE. Specific instructions for OxygenXML were covered in the training. Do to time constraints, we encouraged participants to have the software installed (the trial version will be fine) before the training began.

• 1:00-1:30 PM - Authoring XML schema and defining new content types using the Form Builder and Forms tools
• 1:30-1:45 PM - Understanding how the XML technology stack applies to the OSP tool suite
• 1:45-2:00 PM - Setting up a development environment for building your own forms and templates
• 2:00-2:15 PM - Break
• 2:15-4:00 PM - Building portfolio templates that draw from several content sources and creating an attractive portfolio web site
